Bay Area Orienteering Club (BAOC) map and compass practice.

*NOT* AN OFFICIAL SIERRA CLUB OUTING

Join John Langbein, Karen Davis, Bobbie Morrison, Dave Marancik and other STS members at Calero County Park as they participate in this BAOC event, which will have seven alternative courses, ranging from beginner through expert. The easier courses are on trails, the more advanced ones are cross-country. You can walk them at your leisure, or run them competitively. This is a terrific way to learn and/or refresh your skills.

Saturday: Climb Spanish Mt. 15 miles RT, mostly on trail. 3100 feet gain.
Sunday: Climb Three Sisters. 9 miles RT, cross country. 2000 feet gain.

10:00 AM at San Gregorio State Beach. Practice using your avalanche beacon. Bring you own beacon (ok if it is a rental), ziplock bags and a shovel (for burying the victim beacons). Usually there are a few spare beacons for new people. Directions: from I-280 near Woodside, take Hwy 84 west over the mountains to Hwy 1, turn left then turn right into the San Gregorio State Beach parking lot. (Bring money to park.) Hike, Bike, and Climb at Pinnacles National Monument

Come to the interesting and popular Pinnacles National Monument for a Fall trip. A group camp site has been reserved at the campground for Saturday night, November 8. This is a great area where you can hike, bike or rock climb. Plenty of good hiking and road biking. This is a private trip, no rock climbing instruction is available so be prepared to operate on your own.

At 19,341 feet Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain, yet it requires no technical climbing skills to reach the summit. Join Chris Franchuk in his 2006 ascent via the Marangu Route, from the jungle trailhead through moorland to the icy crater. We will also explore the wildlife found within Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Lake Manyara National Parks in Tanzania.

Saturday: climb Crag Pk. -- round trip 8.6 miles on trail plus 4.4 miles cross-country, with 3200' gain. Sunday: climb Smith Mtn. -- round trip 4 miles cross-country, 1400' gain; and drive home.

This 15-mile day-hike ascends 4000' from the Deafy Glade trailhead to the dual summits. Besides being the namesake peak of Snow Mountain Wilderness, it is also the high point of two counties -- Colusa and Lake. Car-camping is available nearby, enabling our 8:00 AM start.
